Here is some of what you can see and experience on our main trip in Thailand, The Golden Triangle Route:
Arrival days are all accommodated in a great hotel in Pattaya, and the next morning we pick up our bikes before we go on our route.
First days ride is the simple straight roads with little traffic, so that one becomes familiar with the bike, not to mention the traffic picture in Thailand which is no different than what we’re used to from our home country. Here we are driving on the left hand side and we will drive a lot to take this into account. The first day we drive about 330 km and stop at Korat.
The next day we start early to be out on some real roads, and this is where the real experience begins. We follow the Thai countryside and run through two national parks. Late in the afternoon we arrive at Udon Thani, where we will overnight. Mileage for this day is about 360 km.
From Udon Thani we drive along the famous Mekong river in an incredible landscape. We come to a tiny town called Chiang Khan, where we will stay at a resort in the true Thai style. At the restaurant they serve only great Thai food. There will be the opportunity for a boat trip on the river in the evening for those who want to participate. The first leg is approximately 230 km.
The next day it becomes a stage for approximately 300 miles of beautiful inland road almost the whole way. Great scenery and lots of small pit stops to take pictures. Here we will need to watch out for meeting a wild elephant, monkey or other animals along the road is common. We arrive in Uttaradit in the afternoon and will stay at a nice hotel that also has a cowboy bar next door, for those who want to take a trip out. Near the hotel there is also a night market for those who want to shop. Here it is also possible that we get some local Thai bikers visiting us.
So next morning we are off to the town of Chiang Rai, just north of the country. The road here is a highway, but after many winding turns, it is a delicious and relaxing ride. In Chiang Rai we will visit one of Thailand’s largest and most famous temples, and the day after with a visit to the Golden Triangle and House Of Opium for those who wish. We don’t depart before 12 noon the next day, so the night before, one can take a trip around the city of Chiang Rai. We have two nights in Chiang Rai. Stage from Uttaradit to Chiang Rai is about 300 km.
From Chiang Rai, we run a pass down to Chiang Mai. In the evening is held a “Cantoc dinner”, with all its colorful shows. The distance from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai i is about 200 miles, so we take our time, stopping and taking pictures, eating and enjoying ourselves.
So after two nights we shall run the demanding route from Chiang Mai in the Mae Hong Son. The distance is about 250 km, and 200 of these are steep, winding road. Indeed, it is 1864 turns before you arrive, and these are the two most demanding driving days on the trip. When we arrive, we visit “Long Neck” tribes outside the city. Mae Hong Son is one of the most unique cities in Thailand and is located up the mountain at 1500 meters height.
Next day we drive through the most incredible scenery found in Thailand. We drive on the deserted lanes of the high mountain passes and through small villages that hardly ever see a white man. We stop on top of one of the peaks and eat a midday lunch. In the afternoon, when we arrive at Lampang, we will overnight there. This stage is at 360 km, and this will be a long day, when the average speed is relatively low, and with many driving challenges.
From Lampang the roads get easier once again. Now we are heading south on the way back down the country again and we see that civilization is more and more visible. We will visit the sights and spend some time on this ride. Next accommodation in Sukhothai which lies about 300 km away. Sukhothai is packed with history of ancient Thailand, or Siam as it once was called, and here there is much to see.
From Sukhothai our journey continues to the last stop which is “Ape City”! Lop Buri which is located about 260 km further south. Here are the wild monkeys around town, and they live in their own temple, which we obviously are visiting. We stay for the night at the Lop Buri Resort.
So, the final day trip is back to Pattaya to the same hotel as we left 12 days prior. Our last days ride is about 350 km. We celebrate a successful tour with a big pig party in Kåre Party Bar with free food and lots of good drink. The next day is devoted to shopping, when we travel to the airport until the evening.
